CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A wild three-car crash on the Stevenson Expressway this morning has left two injured and is causing a several hours long traffic bottleneck.
Illinois State Police said that around 8:45 a.m. a car was speeding at a high rate on the inbound side of I-55 at Central Avenue when it hit another vehicle, swerved into the left side ditch, became airborne, flipping several times, rolling over the median, and then landing on the outbound side. Once there, the car hit a third vehicle head on.
The driver of the original car and the third car suffered injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Their conditions were not made available.
As of 12:15 p.m., all inbound lanes of the Stevenson are shut down between Harlem and Central for an accident investigation. Illinois State Police are diverting traffic off at Harlem. As a result, traffic has built up at LaGrange.
WBBM traffic reporter Beau Duran suggests bailing out at either Archer or Ogden.
The Outbound Stevenson also remains quite heavy, jammed from Pulaski to past Central.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WBBM Newsradio for updates.
