HIGHLAND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in Highland, Indiana are looking into a bizarre interruption to a town council meeting Wednesday that several leaders are calling “disgusting.”

The Highland, Indiana town council had just started a meeting, which was broadcast over zoom when someone using the name "John Williams" took over the screen with what appeared to be a song and a photo containing a racial slur.

*The full recording of the meeting was posted on the city's Facebook page and contains graphic language.

The image was eventually taken down and the meeting moved forward for about 15 minutes before Toya Smith, the only black council member weighed in.

"I would like to say that I am so disgusted right now," she said.
"It wasn't like a second..it was up there. I watched it and I was just going to wait to see who was going to say something."

Referring to herself by the racial slur projected into the Zoom meeting and saying she was not defeated, Smith received support from fellow council member Mark Schocke.

"What we saw earlier today was blatant racism and I I think it's disgusting and it's despicable. It's not welcome here," he said.

Highland Police are now investigating the incident.
