HINSDALE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Leaders in one western suburb said they are ready in the event a freight train derailment leads to a hazardous materials spill in response to a similar incident that occurred in Ohio earlier this month.

The three track main line of the BNSF railway runs through the center of west suburban Hinsdale.

The busy line is known as the race track and it hosts dozens of freight and passenger trains per day.

Village President Tom Cawley said the village is prepared in the event of a freight train derailment.

"If a train derailment involving hazardous material occurred in Hinsdale, an emergency operation center would be opened by Hinsdale to bring together in one room the fire chief and police chief, senior staff members of the village, representatives of the BNSF railroad, Illinois EPA, representatives of DuPage and Cook County, as well as representatives of the National Transportation Safety Board."
