CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Metra Board of Directors has awarded a $14.5 million contract to renovate the Homewood Station along its Metra Electric Line.

Plans for the current station, originally built in 1923, call for new buildings and ramps and a renovated platform and new lighting.

Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski said the “project represents a significant upgrade to the Homewood Station and its pedestrian tunnel.”

“It will not only create a more welcoming, more accessible station and tunnel for Metra and Amtrak customers, but also a more welcoming gateway for Homewood’s downtown retail district and residential areas,” he said

The work, by IHC Construction of Elgin, starts in the spring. It follows recent investment from Amtrak, which rehabilitated its part of the shared facility.

Amtrak’s work added an enclosed ramp on the west side of the tracks, which will allow customers to access the tunnel leading to both the Amtrak and Metra train platforms, officials wrote in a press release.

The project is expected to take about two years to complete.

Pace and Cook County are among other funding sources for the station’s rehab.
