(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A local hiring expert has some tips on how parents can help their teenager land a summer job.

Rick Cobb, founder of the workplace consulting firm Two Discern in Chicago told WBBM that you can broaden your horizons beyond restaurants, ice cream stands, and the local golf course.

He said parents can check in on local government.

"The municipalites, they are desperate for young talent.  This is a great time to go and knock on doors," Cobb said.

Summer job seekers will get competitive pay. Cobb adds a summer job is more valuable than a paycheck; it's an opportunity.

"If you demonstrate the ability to do the work and to show up, then they're going to expand the opportunities in order to keep you," Cobb said.
