(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's the time of the year to plan for a visit to view the changing colors in the Midwest.

Fall colors begin to pop in the Midwest in October.

Cindy Richards, Editor- in -Chief of She Buys Travel in Chicago tells the Noon Business Hour that the fall hotspots within driving distance tend to fill up fast.

"I'm a big believer in making your reservation as soon as you know you're gonna have time to go and make sure it's refundable if your plans change, you can get your money back from the hotel," she said.

Richards said that places like Mackinaw Island or Door County, Michigan are very popular in the fall and bookings should be made as soon as possible.

While Wisconsin and Michigan are popular fall colors hot spots, she said you can get quite a show if you drive west toward Galena or the quad cities as well.

"It's just beautiful. It can be quite a magical drive."
