Want to make your Halloween pumpkins last longer? On this week's episode of the Gardening Tips podcast, the Chicago Botanic Garden's Jacob Burns talks about how to keep your pumpkins safe from rodents.
Start your pumpkins off right with a soak in vinegar and water for about 15 to 30 minutes to zap away bacteria. Then whip up a sprayable repellent to protect your pumpkins from squirrels and mice. For a spicy shield, mix hot sauce, water, and a few drops of dish soap, or for a fresh twist, combine peppermint oil with water.
Remember to apply every day or two, especially after rain. For extra protection, sprinkle cayenne pepper flakes around them. Rodents will be outta there.
Wait to carve your pumpkins until close to Halloween, and display them in a cozy sheltered spot to keep them safe from the elements. With these chemical-free tricks, your pumpkins will stay fresh and colorful, ready for all the spooky fun.
