(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In Chicago, 1,700 nurses with UI Health walked off the job Wednesday morning. They're striking over what they say are unfair labor practices.
The nurses say there are several issues they are focused on. That includes pay, staffing, work assignments, safety.
The strike authorization vote got support from 88% of those who voted.
Roberto Flores is one of them. He explained that over the summer there was a seven day strike, but this one is open-ended.
“You know, I think the hospital at least got the idea that we were serious last time around. They might have dug their heels thinking that they could just kind of make it through that seven day strike and that things were going to go back to normal afterwards.
“But our membership is dead serious on making sure that they get these improvements and we're not going to back down.”
The two sides have been negotiating for about six months.
