NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Representing the Illinois 14th Congressional District, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood was sworn into her second term during a virtual ceremony Saturday and had much to say about pro-President Donald Trump supporters storming the U.S. Capitol.

"I won't sugarcoat it. We have a long road of recovery ahead, but together we will rebuild," Underwood said.

Underwood said there needs to be more direct aid for families, individuals, businesses and local services, along with access to free COVID-19 vaccines.

She also joined a long list of elected leaders from Illinois in addressing the way Wednesday played out at the nation's capital, calling the event an insurrection and saying there should be no sanctuary for those responsible.

"As we saw this week, our democracy is fragile, and norms that we once took for granted like the peaceful transition of power must be fiercely defended," she said.

Underwood, who represents Naperville, narrowly beat her Republican opponent Jim Oberweis, a state senator from Sugar Grove.
