
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Coronavirus cases continue to spike and break new records in Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Public Health on Saturday reported 12,438 new coronavirus cases, including 76 deaths -- the highest daily caseload recorded yet. More than 98,000 tests have been processed over the past 24 hours, IDPH reported.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and his staffers tested negative after possibly being exposed to COVID-19 on Monday during a meeting in a large conference room in his office, he announced Saturday. The governor isolated and got tested for the virus though everyone wore a mask and was socially distanced during the meeting. The person who had COVID-19 didn't work in the governor's office.
Illinois surpassed 10,000 total coronavirus deaths on Thursday and over the past several days, the state has broken daily coronavirus caseload records. Illinois currently has a total of 477,978 cases, including 10,154 deaths.
IDPH reported that 98,418 coronavirus tests have been processed over the past 24 hours, bringing the state total to 8,313,547 tests. As of Friday night, 4,250 people in Illinois were hospitalized with the coronavirus. Of those, 813 patients were in the intensive care unit and 367 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
Pritzker reinstated coronavirus mitigations as infection rates spiked across the state in recent weeks. Rollbacks include banning indoor dining and gatherings with over 25 people in regions throughout across the state.
