Illinois gas taxes to increase again July 1

Gas pump

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Drivers in Illinois will pay a little more at the gas pump starting this week.

The gas tax increase that was signed into law two years ago doubled the gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon, and then it indexed future increases to the rate of inflation.

The new budget year starts on July 1, and that means that depending on the blend, the gas tax is going up by a half cent per gallon.

Proceeds from the gas tax pay for public transit and infrastructure projects; but critics said it's a regressive tax that hits poor drivers the hardest while forcing drivers to pay the highest gas prices in the region.

Gas Buddy said the average price for gas in Illinois is $3.29 per gallon.
