Illinois landlords file lawsuit over federal extension of eviction moratorium

Eviction notice

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of Illinois landlords has filed a lawsuit challenging the eviction moratorium recently extended by the Centers for Disease Control.

Earlier this month, the CDC extended the federal ban on evictions of renters until Oct. 3.

The lawsuit by the Illinois Rental Property Owners Association, or IRPOA, follows others filed by landlord groups against the federal government since Aug. 3, when the CDC extended the ban.

The landlords contend they’re taking too much of a financial hit by allowing renters to stay in their homes without paying rent. Housing advocates said landlords will get paid when the state doles out more than a billion and a half dollars in federal aid for rental assistance.

Some 96,000 renters in Illinois have applied for such help.
