SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois State Sen. Darren Bailey has proposed reinstating the death penalty for those who kill police officers.
Bailey, who wants to be governor, said “it’s time to stand up and defend the police against a radical mob that’s trying to attack and defund them.”
“This legislation comes after a long line of law enforcement officers were murdered or critically wounded in the line of duty. Some by repeat, violent offenders who were set free by woke prosecutors and judges,” Bailey said.
He was joined by Amber Oberheim, the widow of Champaign police Officer Chris Oberheim, who was shot and killed last year.
“It’s time for the pendulum to swing back towards good and right and noble. It’s time for our state to adopt the values that our country was founded on. It’s for our moral compass to get pointed back in the right direction,” Amber Oberheim said.
Another proposal calls for the death penalty for killing any first responder.
