CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The state is deploying workers who are part of a new street outreach team to Chicago this weekend in an effort to prevent violence.

The Memorial Day weekend typically brings an increase in violence.
Last year, nine people were shot to death and 42 were wounded. That was the worst in five years.

This year, the state is sending about thirty members of a new Crisis Prevention & Response Unit. They’re calling them “Peacekeepers.” They’ll work with others who mediate conflicts, some volunteers, some paid.

“This is another important step towards addressing violence and conflict through research-based, community-focused approaches,” Governor J.B. Pritzker said in a statement.

“It is critical that we have as many stakeholders as possible at the table to ensure peace and safety,” a statement from Mayor Brandon Johnson said.
