(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Republicans say the state is spending too much money on helping migrants, and not enough on other citizens.
State Representative Amy Elik is among the GOP lawmakers who spoke in Springfield on Tuesday.
“We cannot afford to accept hundreds of thousands of individuals and give them the resources they would need to succeed. Illinoisans are begging for tax relief. The Democrats' solution raise taxes to cover the costs for illegal immigrants, and when that doesn't cut it, just spend what we don't have,” Elik said.
State Republicans also said illegal immigrants have committed numerous recent violent crimes in Illinois and are calling for the repeal of the TRUST Act, which generally prohibits local law enforcement in Illinois from participating in immigration enforcement.
“As long as Illinois continues to put illegal immigrants above Illinois families, we will continue to see families and businesses leaving this state in droves. It's bad public policy that has gotten us to this place. This should not be a partisan issue. Illinois citizens should come first.”
Gov. JB Pritzker supports the deportation of violent criminals who are undocumented immigrants, but advocates for law-abiding immigrants.
