Illinois residents in need encouraged to apply for utility relief

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Low-income Illinoisans who need help paying their natural gas and electric bills can get some financial assistance from the state.

Since September, more than 77,000 Illinois families have been helped under the Low-Income Household Energy Assistance Program and $84 million doled out.

“While everyday household costs are increasing – we want Illinois families to know that help is available, and that they don’t have to struggle alone,” David Wortman, deputy director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said in a statement.

There’s still more than $200 million left to help people behind on their utility bills and applications are being accepted through May 31, 2022.

Households that are at 200% of the federal poverty level or below are eligible.
