(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A provider of abortion services in Illinois says it has seen a nearly 55 percent increase in patients since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer.

And Planned Parenthood of Illinois officials say nearly a quarter of their patients traveled from different states, compared to the rate of 7% of out-of-state patients before the decision known as Dobbs.

In the wake of the decision, some states outlawed or restricted abortion, prompting some women to travel out of state to obtain the procedure.

“The Supreme Court stripped away a fundamental right, causing devastating consequences for our patients, especially those forced to travel for care,” Jennifer Welch, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois, said in a prepared statement.

Planned Parenthood of Illinois says more patients are requiring “procedural” abortions, suggesting that the new bans across the country “force patients to delay and travel farther for care.”
