(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An immersive art exhibit about Ukraine that raises money for the embattled nation debuted in Chicago Tuesday for a one-day engagement but will return next month.

"Immersive Shevchenko: Soul of Ukraine” opened in six North American cities, including at Chicago’s Lighthouse ArtSpace, which normally is the home of “Immersive Van Gogh.”

Honoring Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), the Ukrainian poet and artist, the new exhibit projects 200 of Shevchenko’s works on the floors, ceilings and walls.

Lighthouse Immersive Producer Valeriy Kostyukt, who was born in Ukraine, said the Shevchenko project was fast-tracked so that it could be shared with the world as soon as possible after the Russian invasion.

His peers in Kyiv had to prepare the digital presentation quickly and with limited technological resources for the six U.S. venues, he said.

“There’s the physical front in Ukraine, right now, in the battle with the Russian occupational forces. Now, we’re opening this cultural front as well, by promoting Ukrainian arts, promoting Ukrainian artists, showing Ukraine to the world — what this country really is,” Kostyuk said.

All of the proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the Red Cross and the National Bank of Ukraine Fund.

For people who missed Tuesday’s presentation, “Immersive Shevchenko” will be back April 8 at Lighthouse ArtSpace, 108 West Germania Place.
