(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Indiana Dunes National Park will require that visitors buy entrance passes starting Thursday.
Park Supt. Paul Labovitz said the fees are “a positive step to keep the park accessible, safe and vibrant.”
There’s been some grumbling from locals who use portions of the park regularly to exercise, walk dogs and watch birds and other wildlife. Some have noted, too, that low-income families may be priced out.
Passes cost $25 dollars for vehicles (good for up to 7 days) and $20 for motorcycles. The charge is $15 for those who walk, bike or boat into the park.
There’s an annual pass for $45. See details here.
They can be bought on the National Park Service website or in the park’s visitor center, Paul Douglas Center and West Beach entrance.
About 3 million people visit the park each year.
If each were to pay $25, the park would make $75 million.
