(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Health officials in Indiana — where COVID-19 cases have surged — are warning people against taking a deworming medicine prescribed for animals and sometimes humans.

Misinformation online has made some people think Ivermectine
may help lessen COVID symptoms. But the CDC this week noted the FDA has not authorized its use for COVID-19 and there is insufficient research to support the anti-parastic drug as a treatment.

Poison control centers have seen a spike in people reporting adverse effects to the drug, officials said.

“Don’t take a medicine that is prescribed for animals, especially large animals, that has not been proven to affect a virus or a disease,” Indiana State Health Commissioner Christina Box said.

Her state has seen more than 20,000 new cases of coronavirus this week, including infections in children, she said Friday.
