INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - After more than 30 years, Indiana State Police have identified Harry Edward Greenwell as the so-called, “I-65 killer,” who murdered at least three women in the late 80s, including a woman from Merrillville.

“The message is, he might be able to hide for a while but we’re going to find you, even if you’re not here,” State Police Superintendent Doug Carter said.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said investigative genealogy was used to identify the man. Greenwell died in 2013 at the age of 69 and had an extensive criminal past.

Fifield said the DNA results were 99.999% positive that Greenwell raped and murdered Vicki Heath in February of 1987, Jeanne Gilbert, and Mary “Peggy” Gil in March of 1989, and also raped and stabbed a woman who survived and provided a description.

“I’m not going to begin to try to understand or say that I understand because none of us do. But, I hope that today might bring a little bit of solace to you, to know that the animal that did this is no longer on this earth,” said Carter.
