(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An Illinois State Police trooper who was shot and beaten during a traffic stop in Springfield last week has made progress in his recovery but remains hospitalized.
State Police Director Brendan Kelly said Cristobal Santana of Chicago fired at least 10 shots at Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green on Oct. 24, wounding him.
Santana allegedly then hit Chapman-Green in the head with a gun several times.
"He's still in the hospital and continues to improve each day. He's in good spirits, and he looked a hell of a lot better than he did last week, thank god," Kelly said.
Prosecutors have filed various charges against Santana, including attempted murder.
The incident came days after Chicago Public Schools teacher Adrianna Lopez was shot and killed outside her home in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
Lopez's family says Santana was her ex-boyfriend.
Kelly would only say Santana was a "person of interest" in a homicide in Chicago. He said it would be up to Chicago police officials to provide more information.
