CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Christians celebrated Easter on Sunday, and Cardinal Blase Cupich led mass at St. Francis Borgia Parish on the Northwest Side.
Cupich spoke to churchgoers about some of the effects of faith.
“To get up on a new day after so much has pressed upon us in life, and burdened us, and we found no way forward — still, there is something in us that allowed us to get up and take on the challenges of a new day,” he said.
Cupich instructed those listening to let the Easter holiday inspire them to cope with everyday problems.
“Maybe, in fact, you have experienced in your life, a moment in which you have come up against a dead end, in which there are all sorts of worries and anxieties and problems in your life, you had no idea how you were going to overcome it,” he said. “And yet, within you, there was a hope that tomorrow would be better.”
Parishioners should look for the impact of the resurrection in their lives every day, not only on Easter, the cardinal said.
The Chicago Archdiocese also broke out the dictionary for the holiday. In a news release, church officials wrote that the word “Easter” comes from old english and means, “the east.”
It refers to the rising sun, which brings light, warmth, and hope, they wrote.
