INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Employees of Indiana University Health are organizing a protest Saturday in Indianapolis over a COVID-19 vaccination mandate.
The IU Health workers said the choice they’ve been given isn’t a choice at all: get the vax or get the ax.
The IU Health workers have to be vaccinated or get a deferral for medical or religious reasons by Sept. 1 or they will be terminated.
Traci Staley, one of the employees, told CBS 4 Indianapolis with long-term studies still happening, uncertainty about vaccine side effects, and pending FDA approvals, getting the vaccine should be a personal choice and not forced by employers.
"They are telling us, 'well you do have a choice.' But what kind of choice is it? We are being threatened and backed into a corner until you take this vaccine that you do not believe in or agree with, that you don't feel is safe, or lose your livelihood," she said.
She started a Facebook group, Indiana Against the Mandate, that has more than 5,000 members.
IU Health said in a statement it has required that employees get the flu vaccine and several others since 2012 as a condition of employment.
