(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Retiring Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White campaigned Friday with Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia, the candidate he’s endorsed to replace him.

White joined Valencia for some lunch and campaigning at Manny’s Deli. It was notable because White is going against other Democratic leaders who have supported Alexi Giannoulias for the party nomination; Giannoulias is a former state treasurer.

White described Valencia as “the best and brightest.” Valencia said White’s endorsement is a big deal because he is the state’s top vote-getter.

“This is going to be a great boost for fundraising, for union support  and people who may be in the middle want to come over and know we’re going to win,” she said.

If elected in a general election, Valencia would become the first woman and first Latina to become Illinois secretary of state.
