(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As Kane County Board members are working to balance next year's budget, two proposed tax increases have sparked debate among the representatives.
One proposal calls for a 1.4% hike in the county's portion of property tax bills.
This comes as the board is also considering a 2-cents-a-gallon increase in the gasoline tax.
Board member Ken Shepro said he doubts many Kane County residents would support both tax hikes.
One idea before the panel is to close a $10 million budget shortfall by emptying the county's savings account and using federal COVID relief money.
Board member Vern Tepe notes those are one-time fixes. He favors the property tax increase, which he says is modest.
Shepro said the gasoline tax hike would make the property tax hike unnecessary.
