(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. JB Pritzker has now signed Karina's Law, which enhances protections for survivors of domestic violence.
The new law allows law enforcement to more quickly remove guns from the possession of anyone whose Firearm Owner's ID (FOID) card has been revoked because of a court order.
Representative Maura Hirschauer was the House sponsor of the law.
“Our goal is and always will be to keep survivors, their families, and the brave law enforcement officers who serve these orders safe from harm,” Hirschauer said.
Karina Gonzalez, for whom the law is named, was shot to death along with her daughter Daniela by her abusive husband after she had obtained an order of protection.
Her son Manny Alvarez survived the attack and championed the legislation. Pritzker praised him.
“I know that there are no words comforting enough to ease that sorrow, but what you have done. To stand up for survivors and use your voice to prevent this from happening again is nothing short of remarkable.”
The law allows police to confiscate guns from anyone whose FOID card has been revoked due to restraining orders.
