(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger offered support Monday for an embattled GOP colleague who is poised to be removed from a minority leadership position in the House.
Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming is the No. 3 Republican in the House, but has lost support as she continues to call out former President Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.
Cheney is one of 10 Republicans, including Kinzinger, who later voted to impeach Trump.
“If you want to hide because you don't want to tick off the base and tell the truth about Jan. 6 — you don't want to have to admit that Joe Biden won an election — Cheney makes it uncomfortable for you,” Kinzinger said in a virtual appearance with the National Press Club.
Party leaders have continued to defend Trump, who has falsely claimed he actually won the 2020 presidential race.
Kinzinger said the GOP will have to return to the types of values it espoused before Trump — or run the risk of killing the party.
