CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she'll fight for changes in a measure that passed the Illinois Senate that would have Chicago eventually switch over to an elected school board.

Lightfoot on Wednesday said politics, rather than concern for school children, is at play.

The mayor, who currently appoints Board of Education members, said she wants to make sure parents and Local School Councils will continue to be heard. Lightfoot said these kinds of "core values" seem to be lost on state lawmakers.

The mayor noted there would be no campaign spending limits for school board candidates, inferring that rich people would be at an advantage.

Lightfoot said she'll be making her case as the Illinois House considers the bill passed by the Senate.
