(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than two dozen people have applied to fill the 11th Ward aldermanic seat vacated by Patrick Daley Thompson.
Thompson was forced to resign from the Chicago City Council when a federal jury found him guilty of bank fraud. Mayor Lightfoot set up a four-person committee to screen candidates for the job. The power to select the next council member from the ward is hers.
Friday was the deadline for applications, and the mayor’s office says 27 were received.
In a statement, a mayoral spokesperson says the 11th Ward deserves to be represented by someone who embodies the values of its community.
The 11th Ward is likely to be reconfigured to make it predominately Asian American. The mayor has not suggested she would pick someone of Asian descent, but she acknowledges the pressure from that community.
