OAK PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A local comic book store hopes it won't need "super powers" to keep the doors open.

Rick Manzella has owned One Stop Comics in west suburban Oak Park for years. He spent part of "Free Comic Book Day" reflecting on the American art form.

"For a long time, superhero comics became the dominant force, but today we're seeing many other genres coming back in a very strong fashion," he said.

Examples of other genres from the 1940's and 1950's include comedy, romance and horror.

Although comic books will certainly be around for a while, Manzella said he is unsure about his longtime location on South Ridgeland Avenue in the shadow of the Green Line tracks.

"Right now, we're not sure if our building is going to stay up or they're going to knock it down for condos or we're here without a lease looking for a new location, so a lot of things are changing," Manzella said.

But even if the doors close at the current shop, Manzella said the website is thriving.
