CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Field Foundation of Illinois and MacArthur foundations honored 10 leaders in Chicago who have been fighting against racism, disinvestment and more.
Field Foundation Leadership Investment Program Officer Analìa Rodrìguez said people judged as leaders for a new Chicago will be awarded $25,000 each for work throughout the area.
She said they not only wanted to award people who have founded or led groups, but they also wanted to award those doing the real work.
"We really wanna [sic] make sure that leadership is being represented not only by executive directors, founders, but also by people who do the work in the background whose leadership shows up maybe not in the front, maybe not in the podium or in the press," Rodrìguez said.
The honorees are a diverse group. For example, Irene Romulo runs a community-based news organization, Cicero Independencia. Trina Reynolds-Tyler is Director of Data for the Invisible Institute, which looks into police misconduct.
Among the other awardees, Avery R. Young teaches Art with Urban Gateways, and Antonio Gutierrez is a coordinator with Organized Communities Against Deportations.
The program's in its fourth year.
