DEKALB, IL (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Northern Illinois University professor is the director of a new butterflies documentary that will air Tuesday night.
Randy Caspersen admitted it’s rather spiritual for him, visiting the garden behind the Mayfield Congregational Church in Sycamore. The church has transformed its rural backyard into a sanctuary for monarch butterflies.
Caspersen is the creator of the documentary, “Plants, Pollinators & Prayers”. The film focuses on the church’s efforts to help the butterflies thrive, at a time their population is declining in the Midwest.
“It’s really gotten me to think differently about connecting back to nature and also back to my own spiritual issues or quests, thinking about how I want to connect to the earth,” Caspersen said at a Zoom event for the Interfaith Film & Music Festival.
The professor made more than 50 visits to the garden for the film. The documentary thus far has been played at film festivals but this Tuesday will be the first in-person screening. It will be at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.
