(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A teenage girl from the western suburbs was among more than a dozen young women honored at the White House Wednesday.

17-year old Anja Herrman of River Forest attended the first Girls Leading Change event at the White House. She was honored for working towards inclusion and disability rights. As she put it in a video clip just before the event, she’s leading change by publishing articles on her unique perspective as a young disabled woman growing up in America.

"The girls on this stage are using their voices to change their communities and shine a light on issues that are often overlooked," First Lady Jill Biden said during the event.

Among Herrman’s writings was a white paper highlighting the need for school shooting plans that account for the safety of students with disabilities.
