HICKORY HILLS, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – A Willow Springs man faces two attempted kidnapping charges after authorities said he separately approached two girls at a shopping center Tuesday and repeatedly ordered them into his vehicle.
Nicholas P. Hayes, 28, was arrested shortly after the encounters near 95th Street and Roberts Road. His detention hearing was scheduled for Friday at the Cook County courthouse in Bridgeview.
Officers responded around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and learned that two girls had been approached within a short period, according to Hickory Hills police.
In one encounter, a man driving a silver SUV repeatedly ordered a 14-year-old girl into the vehicle and followed her as she tried to walk away. He left after she sought help and people nearby intervened, authorities said.
In the other encounter, which occurred moments earlier, a girl told the man she was a minor and tried to get away. He exited the vehicle and chased her on foot, investigators said. An adult confronted him and brought the girl to safety.
Officers obtained surveillance footage identifying the vehicle as a silver Hyundai SUV. A license plate reader subsequently detected it, and Willow Springs officers located the SUV near 87th Street and Oak Grove Avenue and arrested Hayes.
Investigators used witness interviews, surveillance recordings, photo lineups and interviews conducted through the All Our Children’s Advocacy Center to build the case.
Hayes was also wanted on unrelated public indecency warrants from Naperville and Waukegan, according to police.
