CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago’s beach season ended on a tragic note as a man drowned on the South Side Monday night.

Chicago police said the man was with a group of people swimming near 50th and DuSable Lake Shore Drive, just south of 49th Street Beach, when he didn’t resurface.

It was around 10:22 p.m., more than three hours after lifeguards finished.

The Police Marine Unit found the 27-year-old man. He died at the hospital.

Monday night's drowning was one of three water-related incidents in Lake Michigan in a 24-hour span.

Earlier Monday, in Northwest Indiana, a teenager was rescued from the water at East Chicago's Jeorse Park Beach. A witness told police the teen had ignored Marina employees' warning and jumped off the rocks into the water. The teen's friends tried to pull him out but failed. The Lake County Sheriff's dive team located the unconscious teen and pulled him out. He was transported to St. Catherine Hospital in critical condition, but later died.

Overnight, a 46-year-old woman was rescued near the south end of Montrose Harbor after she dove in and did not resurface. Chicago police's marine unit pulled the woman out of the water. She was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition.

As of last Friday, the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project has tracked at least 31 drownings in Lake Michigan this year.
