CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A man in his 20s from Peoria County and two women in their 40s — one from Cook County and the other from Winnebago County — are among the 106 latest victims who died from COVID-19 in Illinois, state health officials reported on Tuesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health hasn't released the exact ages of the victims or whether they had underlying conditions.


The latest coronavirus deaths were reported along with the 5,644 new confirmed and probable cases of the disease on Tuesday., the IDPH reported.

Since the pandemic's start, the IDPH reported a total of 948,006 cases, including 16,179 deaths.

Over the past 24 hours, 66,786 tests were performed for a total 13,103,444. As of Monday night, 4,313 people were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 904 patients were in the intensive care unit and 506 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

On Tuesday morning, Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at Malcolm X College on the Near West Side. The day before, Chicago began giving its first doses of the Moderna vaccine to healthcare workers.

Chicago is currently averaging 1,075 new COVID-19 cases every day, down from a daily average of nearly 1,300 a week ago, Arwady said. The city is averaging 17 COVID-19-related deaths per day. Chicago to date has had nearly 200,000 diagnosed COVID-19 cases and more than 4,000 related deaths.
