(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A civil investigation is underway, days after Elk Grove Village Police fatally shot a man who family members say was having a medical crisis.
“We don’t know what took place on Friday afternoon, but we know our family deserves answers,” Liz Belcaster said Monday.
Her nephew, 24-year-old Jack Murray, was shot and killed by police outside of his home Friday, after relatives say he called 9-1-1 for help with his Type One diabetes. Police said Friday the person they encountered had a knife.
“We call for immediate transparency in release of the 9-1-1 call,” said lawyer Antonio Romanucci, who is representing the family. “We also want release of all bodycam, dashcam and any other security footage they have that was in the immediate area that night.”
Romanucci was critical authorities for not allowing family members to see Murray in the hospital before he died.
“To me, it’s nearly morally reprehensible to not let them in the room, even if there’s a police officer there, to say goodbye. I don’t understand it,” he said.
Romanucci says Elk Grove Village Police have so far refused to cooperate or respond to the family’s questions.
