(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A man was shot on the Southwest Side early Monday after he confronted a catalytic convertor thief, police said.

The 35-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, authorities said.

Police say the man had heard a noise at about 5 a.m. outside his McKinley Park home in the 1700 block of West 34th street.

That noise turned out to be someone trying to steal his catalytic convertor and at least one person opened fire on the man in the following confrontation, police said.

No suspects are in custody. Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area can leave an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com.
