(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago City Council Committee is recommending final passage of a measure that could lead to an increase in the real-estate transfer tax to fund housing and programs for the homeless.
The Rules Committee voted 32-16 to put the "Bring Chicago Home" measure on the ballot this spring, but the game was closer than the score would indicate.
Much of the hearing was a matter of procedural jousting by some who wanted to stall the measure in favor of one questioning Chicago's status as a "Sanctuary City."
Ald. Maria Hadden, 49th, the lead sponsor of the tax measure, expressed frustration.
"This is like the world's slowest game of ping pong," she said.
Among the opponents was Ald. Ray Lopez, 15th, who said there needs to be greater transparency about how the city spends funds to help the unhoused.
"I don't think any of us argue that we need to address homelessness in the city of Chicago," he said.
The measure now goes to the full City Council.
