CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 1,400 violent criminals were taken into custody by federal and local task forces nationwide as part of Operation North Star, which targeted the most violent offenders in 10 major U.S. cities, including Chicago.

Thursday afternoon, U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Illinois LaDon Reynolds announced that 156 Chicago-area arrests had been made as part of Operation North Star during the month of June.

Among those arrested was a 19-year-old Chicago man who allegedly shot a U.S. marshal and his K-9 in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood on June 2.

“We concentrated on fugitives wanted for the most serious, violent, and harmful offenses,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said both the marshal and his K-9 are recovering.

Over the course of the 30-day initiative, Reynolds said investigators used data to focus on individuals who had a heightened indicator for violence.

“We focused on those individuals who had a propensity [for violence] or used a firearm in commission of a crime, in thoughts that a good indicator for violence was a past history of such,” Reynolds said.

Fourteen of the arrests made were for homicide, Reynolds said, while 33 were for sexual assault.
