CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot said Chicago probably won’t ever go back to a full shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, she said, some kind of action may be needed if a current rise in infections gets much worse.

Make no mistake, said Mayor Lightfoot, the paces of coronavirus are on the rise again in Chicago. The number of new cases each day has doubled over what it was just months ago and so has the percentage of people testing positive for COVID-19.

"We've also seen a number of outbreaks involving younger people, among sports teams and as a result of bar crawls. And let me be clear, it is not the playing of the sports or being at bars that are causing these outbreaks, it's the risky behavior in those settings that's creating the problem," Lightfoot said.

Those risky behaviors include not wearing masks or social distancing.

The Mayor is pleading with Chicagoans to keep doing things that have helped the city progress for awhile longer, until the vaccines have a real impact.
