(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The McHenry County Department of Health reported the county’s first probable case of monkeypox early Sunday morning.
Officials said in a statement that the virus has been identified in an adult who met initial criteria and had a “positive orthopoxvirus result,” though they added that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will need to confirm the case.
The individual, who was not identified by name, age, or gender, is fully cooperating and remains in isolation, officials said.
The McHenry County Department of Health said partnering with the Illinois Department of Public Health to conduct contract tracing and identify anyone else who might have come into close contact with the individual.
In a statement, the McHenry County Department of Health said the risk of monkeypox remains low to residents.
The CDC said there have been 174 cases of monkeypox in Illinois and 1,814 cases in the United States.
