(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Shannon Murphy is the board president of Meals on Wheels Chicago, which has helped seniors and people with disabilities in the city overcome food insecurity since 1987.

She says the program serves more than 13,000 people annually.

"It comes out to about 4.7 million meals each year," she tells WBBM Newsradio.

Meals on Wheels runs a pantry on Ogden Avenue near Polk Street called Nourish Chicago. There, seniors can come every fourth Tuesday of the month.

"It's fully stocked with food and wellness essentials. The clients, our seniors, get to come in and choose the food and items that they need," Murphy said.
Now that the need is growing, she hopes more people will visit mealsonwheelschicago.org to find out how they can help.

"Unfortunately, a lot of the pandemic-related relief funds are drying up, and the cost of food is rising, and our seniors are being forced to stretch their budgets even more,” she said. “We are becoming more reliant on donations from our community.”
