CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago's inaugural Poet Laureate Avery R. Young will make his first official public appearance Saturday afternoon.
Young is an award-winning poet, educator, composer, performer, and producer whose work spans the genres of music, performance, visual arts and literature. He was chosen from about 1,300 submitted nominations earlier in 2023
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the Chicago-born Young, as a multi-faceted, boundary-breaking poet and transformational youth educator, will serve and strengthen the city's literary and creative communities.
As Chicago’s Poet Laureate, Young will serve a two-year term and receive $50,000 to create new poems and public programming.
Saturday’s event has been billed as an opportunity to meet Young. It will be free to the public and will take place from 2 – 3 p.m. at Harold Washington Library.
