(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two men are dead after speeding away from police in Aurora Friday morning.

It was about 9:30 a.m.when Aurora Police conducted a traffic stop at South Fourth Street and Galena Boulevard.

A 24-year-old man from Aurora — wanted on a warrant — was driving, officials said. A 52-year-old Chicago man was a passenger; the Illinois Department of Corrections reportedly was looking for him.

Police officers informed the passenger he was under arrest and told him to exit the vehicle, but then the driver sped off, the Aurora Police Department said in a news release.

Officers gave chase at first but then pulled back because of the high-rate of speed. The vehicle they were pursuing crashed soon after. It “sustained significant damage,” and both men  were killed.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force and Aurora Police are investigating.
