NEW BUFFALO, Mich. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The plan commission in New Buffalo has rejected two zoning plans forwarded by the city council concerning short-term rentals and owners believe more limits are coming.

The Plan Commission heard from mostly supporters of short-term rentals in the vacation community.

“The limit on short-term rentals seems particularly inopportune during COVID when many people want to stay in a separate house,” one person said.

An opponent said short term rentals destroy communities as you no longer know your neighbor.

“And the tax revenue going to a city from a hotel stays locally and is put into the local economy versus corporations Vrbo, AirBnB and out-of-staters profiting and taking money out of our economy

The mayor, John Humphrey, elected in November, is opposed.

And by sending the issue back to the city council, the owner of a vacation rental management company said:

“Again, I appreciate what you’re doing, but it’s just going to go back to the wolves,” he said.
