(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Indiana man who had been trapped in his crashed truck for several days along I-94 before being rescued Tuesday is thanking everyone for their well wishes while asking for privacy.
Seriously injured motorist Matt Reum was discovered in the afternoon when two fishermen discovered the wreckage of his truck beneath an overpass near Portage. He told them he had been trapped in the vehicle for nearly a week and could not reach his cell phone.
The 27-year-old, who remains in critical condition at a South Bend, Indiana hospital, has asked for time to rest and heal, in a statement released through state police.
Reum said he would be willing to share his experience eventually, but offered this tidbit in the interim:
“No matter how tough things get, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes in the least expected way.”
An online fundraiser started to help Reum pay his medical bills has already raised more than $30,000. The organizer of the effort says the South Bend resident has several broken bones and may have to have an amputation.
