(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The mountain lion that the state Department of Natural Resources has been monitoring has been on the move the past few days.
The mountain lion is being tracked by a GPS collar that was fitted a year ago by wildlife biologists in Nebraska.
The Illinois DNR is working with them, watching the animal’s movements and he was most recently on the outskirts of Springfield.
He made his way across Nebraska and Iowa and then Illinois and has been moving to the south-east. There have been no known conflicts between the animal and humans.
This is the second wild mountain lion known to be in Illinois in the past two weeks. One was hit by a car and was killed earlier this month in DeKalb County.
The DNR warns people to leave the animal alone. They’re protected in a state where they were wiped out in the late 1800's and in recent years, there have been sporadic sightings.
In 2008, a mountain lion made its was from the Black Hills to Roscoe Village, where the animal was shot and killed by Chicago Police.
