(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Workers at the Museum of Science and Industry are taking steps to form a union.

Dozens of MSI workers have signed a public letter indicating they want to be part of a union.

Santi Van Lysebettens runs programs and gives tours. She said when she started in 2018, she was paid $12.50 an hour, which she says is not a living wage.

“Upper management coming in to our meetings now saying, ‘Hey, guys, what do you need? Let us know what you need. Whatever you need, you can have.’ But, it’s things like air purifiers and Keurigs. That doesn’t pay our rent. That doesn’t pay our student loans.”

Van Lysebettens said worker safety is also a concern, especially in places like the museum’s coal mine exhibit. She says a co-worker recently was hurt there.

The Museum of Science and Industry responds by saying it respects workers’ rights to decide whether or not to unionize.

Officials said a large part of its long-term strategy is to recruit, retain and reward employees.
